SLEEPY FOX EDITING SERVICES
The prices below are standard prices only. I strive to be an affordable source of editing and can offer a sliding rate scale. I will ask to see your project and will provide a free sample edit of 5-10 pages on full-length works. This allows me to offer a custom quote depending on the work required. This also lets you, the author, see the kind of feedback I provide to ensure we’re a good fit for each other!
For client references, portfolio, and other questions answered, see below the price list.
EDITING
-
developmental 3¢ per word
Developmental edits focus on the big picture of a manuscript, addressing potential issues with its overall structure, plot, character development, pacing, and other core storytelling elements.
-
line edits 1¢ per word
Line edits occur after developmental edits. Also known as stylistic editing, these edits will come with inline notes to assist with language use, tone, style, as well as grammar and mechanics. Line edits seek to refine vocabulary by replacing vague or repetitive words, addressing echoes and filtering phrases, and suggesting stronger, more precise alternatives that match with the author's intended tone and style.
-
proofread .007¢ per word
This service is for works that have already undergone editing and need only a final proofread for typos, minor grammar corrections, etc.
BLURBS
-
pick-me-up $40
Author supplies an existing blurb between 100-500 words. You will be asked clarifying questions as needed regarding target audience, tropes, and plot elements to create punchier lines and hooks, and keep your blurb at an ideal 200-250 words.
-
build-a-blurb $100
Author supplies a 1-5 page synopsis of the story. You will be provided questions to dig deep into the elements of the story, and a blurb will be written and honed custom for you.
FAQ
Q: What books have you edited?
A: You can find a list of projects I’ve worked on here!
Q: What genres do you specialize in?
A: While I’m open to many genres, I would say my strengths are in horror, dark fantasy/grimdark, and anything queer. I’ve also beta-read a fair number of queer romance books over the years.
Q: Do you edit shorter works?
A: Yes! I’m happy to edit short stories, novellas, or poetry. I offer discounts on shorter works as they’re much less of a time commitment. I have many clients whose work I can’t list because I edit their work to prepare it for submission to publishers, magazines, and anthologies.
Q: Do you offer payment arrangements or discounts?
A: Yes! If you need to break up the amount, I’m happy to chat and see how I can help accommodate. As mentioned above, my rates are also based on looking at your project to estimate the time I’ll need for completion. Someone who’s book needs heavy edits will have a higher rate than someone who needs minor changes.
Q: How long is your turnaround?
A: This can depend on multiple factors: how busy I currently am, the length of your project, the amount of editing it needs, and if you have a deadline you’re trying to meet. Shorter works could take as little as a few days.
Q: Is there anything you won’t edit?
A: I can handle most any trigger warnings, though a heads up is nice! I will refuse or discontinue projects with heavy elements of SA or explicit animal torture/abuse. If I encounter material in your work I feel is problematic (poor representation, racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, etc.) I will make note of it in my comments to you. As someone who is queer and neurodivergent, I’m qualified to sensitivity read on a number of related topics.
Q: Do you fact-check when you edit?
A: To the best of my ability, yes. If you’re looking for someone to look for things like accuracy in a historical piece, you should find someone who specializes in that era. However, I’m very prone to looking up small details. I’ve pointed out things in work such as mistakes in coroner procedures, animals facts and environmental details (e.g., “fireflies don’t live in this climate where the story takes place”), anachronisms (especially with etymology), etc.
